5 Things to keep in mind when using WhatsApp for payment:

Works on UPI

WhatsApp works on the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), the same system used by various apps from Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, and banks. So you don’t need to save money on WhatsApp for Wallet. WhatsApp will create a new UPI ID when you sign up for payment. You can find this ID in the ‘Locate payments’ section of the app.

Registration

You must have a bank account and a phone number to enable payment on WhatsApp. Payments can be made by clicking on the ‘attachments’ icon at the bottom of the screen, which you would normally use to send photos, videos, etc. WhatsApp will first instruct you to register and allow the use of phone calls and messages. To complete the registration. To pay, you must also set the UPI access code. If you already have a UPI passcode with your existing UPI application, you can use the same code.

Use it with other payment apps

You can use WhatsApp payments to send money to anyone with UPI enabled, either through another app like BHIM, Google Pay or PhonePe. If WhatsApp is not registered for payment, WhatsApp gives you the option to ‘UP Enter UPI ID’. Then you can enter your BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, or other UPI IDs to transact. Alternatively, they can complete the WhatsApp registration process to initiate the transaction. This will involve the same phone number and bank account verification process. Once both parties have completed the process, you can send and receive payments by clicking on the contact and then navigating to the payment via the attached icon.

Indian numbers only

WhatsApp Pay can only be used for Indian numbers linked to Indian bank accounts. People who have WhatsApp on international numbers cannot use them.

Transaction limit and fee

The 1 lakh transaction limit for UPI also applies to WhatsApp. UPI is a free service and you will not be charged for the transaction. Some UPI applications allow you to send money to people just by entering their bank account number and IFSC code. This feature is not yet enabled on WhatsApp.
