Who is Harshal Patel?

Harshal Patel, A right-handed with a superb outswinger, Patel took 23 wickets at the 2008-09 Veenu Mankad U19 Trophy with an impressive 11 average. He later made his one-day debut with Gujarat in 2009-10. Harshal’s family had planned to move to America, but his brother Tapan Patel arranged for him to stay in India for cricket’s sake. Harshal was named in the squad for the 2010 U19 World Cup in New Zealand. He was one of the three players from that team to sign an IPL contract with Mumbai Indians.

Ignored by Gujarat selectors for the first-class team, Harshal turned to Haryana and made an immediate impact in his first season in the Ranji Trophy in 2011-12, with eight consecutive forms in the quarter-finals and semi-finals from Karnataka and Rajasthan. He was awarded a contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2012 Indian Premier League.

However, Herschel was largely seen as a backup in the franchise setup, rather than the first choice. He did not get a game in IPL 2013, but was bought by the franchise at auction in 2014 for Rs 40 lakh. While his top-class form sank in the middle, he made a strong comeback in the 2015–16 season. His 22-wicket tally in the Ranji Trophy in 2015-16 was added to the spoils of 13 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, in which he also collected his first five-match A-list. Prior to the 2016 IPL Player Auction, they were hosted by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
